Girona Hold Real Madrid to 1-1 Draw at Montilivi

Girona and Real Madrid shared the points in a hard-fought 1-1 draw on Sunday evening at Estadi Montilivi in La Liga matchday 17 of the 2025-26 season.
The home side took a deserved lead on the stroke of half-time when Moroccan midfielder Abdelhamid Sabiri fired a powerful first-time shot into the bottom corner after a swift counter-attack, leaving Thibaut Courtois with no chance.
Real Madrid, now under Xabi Alonso, struggled to break down Girona’s compact defence for large periods but were handed a route back into the game in the 65th minute when the referee pointed to the spot following a VAR review for a foul on Vinícius Júnior. Kylian Mbappé stepped up and calmly converted the penalty in the 67th minute, scoring his 15th league goal of the campaign.
Despite late pressure from the visitors, Míchel’s Girona remained disciplined and organised, securing a valuable point that keeps them firmly in the European race. The result means Barcelona retain their position at the top of the table, while Real Madrid remain in second place.
Girona’s unbeaten home record against the traditional top three continues, underlining their status as one of the division’s most resilient sides this season.
