Barcelona Edge Espanyol 2-0 in Tense Catalan Derby to Extend La Liga Lead

Barcelona kicked off 2026 with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over city rivals Espanyol in the Catalan derby at the RCDE Stadium on January 3, extending their lead at the top of La Liga to seven points.
Despite dominating possession with over 76%, Hansi Flick's side struggled to break down a resilient Espanyol team that arrived on a five-match winning streak and sitting fifth in the table. The hosts created the better chances throughout, forcing Barcelona goalkeeper Joan García into a series of outstanding saves on his return to his former club.
García, who joined Barcelona for €25 million last summer, delivered a man-of-the-match performance with six crucial stops, denying Espanyol a deserved breakthrough. Coach Flick admitted post-match: "We didn't deserve the win. I have to thank Joan García for an unbelievable performance."
The deadlock was finally broken in the 86th minute when substitute Dani Olmo finished clinically after a precise assist from fellow substitute Fermín López. Robert Lewandowski sealed the result in stoppage time, capitalizing on another López setup.The win marked Barcelona's ninth consecutive La Liga victory, underscoring their title credentials despite a below-par display against a spirited Espanyol side.
