Rodri Fined £80,000 by FA for Referee Comments, Escapes Suspension

Manchester City midfielder Rodri has been handed an £80,000 fine by the Football Association (FA) following controversial post-match remarks about refereeing in February's Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur. The Spanish international, who recently claimed the Ballon d'Or, avoided any suspension after admitting the charge.
The incident stemmed from City's 2-2 draw at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on February 1, where Rodri expressed frustration over perceived officiating decisions. In a media interview, he stated: "I know we have won too much and people do not want us to win, but the referee has to be neutral... it's not fair." The FA ruled that these comments implied bias and questioned the integrity of match officials, breaching Rule E3.1.
An independent Regulatory Commission imposed the penalty on March 9, 2026, along with a warning about future conduct. No sporting sanction was applied, meaning Rodri remains available for Manchester City's upcoming fixtures in their title challenge.
The decision has reignited debates over referee accountability and consistency in the Premier League. While some supporters praised Rodri for speaking out against repeated grievances, critics accused him of undermining officials. The fine—equivalent to roughly $107,000—represents a notable but non-disruptive punishment for the influential midfielder.
