History Made: No Real Madrid Players in Spain’s World Cup Squad for the First Time

For the first time in football history, Spain will head to the FIFA World Cup without a single Real Madrid player in their ranks. Head coach Luis de la Fuente finalized his 26-man roster for the 2026 tournament, completely shattering a historic streak that had stood since Spain’s tournament debut in 1934.
While Los Blancos players like Fran García and Gonzalo García were named in the initial 55-man provisional list, none made the final cut due to tactical adjustments and recent form. Veteran defender Dani Carvajal missed out entirely following a series of injury setbacks.
In stark contrast, El Clásico rivals Barcelona dominate the selection. Despite Fermín López missing out through injury, an imposing eight-man Blaugrana contingent headlines the squad, featuring Lamine Yamal, Pedri, a returning Gavi, and young defender Pau Cubarsí.
Responding to growing scrutiny over the unprecedented absence of Real Madrid players, De la Fuente remained firm on his philosophy. "I don't look at where they play," the manager stated. "I look at what they bring to the pitch." Spain kicks off this historic, new-look campaign on June 15 against Cape Verde.
