Nightmare in the Spotlight: Sithole's Costly World Cup Collapse

In the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup between South Africa and Mexico, South African midfielder Yaya Sithole endured a nightmare outing. After making a costly mistake that led to a goal in the first half, he was sent off in the second half following a foul, becoming the first player since 2006 to both commit an error leading to a goal and receive a red card in the same World Cup match.
According to statistics, Sithole is only the third player since records began in 1966 to both make an error that directly resulted in a goal and be shown a red card in the same World Cup game.
The previous two players to suffer the same fate were Cyrille Domoraud, who did so for Côte d'Ivoire against Serbia in 2006, and Tomáš Ujfaluši, who experienced it for the Czech Republic against Ghana during the same tournament.
