In the World Cup group stage match that concluded this morning, Brazil drew 1-1 with Morocco. Moroccan midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, only 18 years old, delivered an exceptionally mature performance beyond his years, anchoring the midfield with composure and sparking widespread discussion among fans. Hupu users awarded him a remarkable 9.7 rating.
Bouaddi was born in 2007 and currently plays for Ligue 1 side Lille. He holds dual Moroccan and French nationality. A product of the French youth system, Bouaddi was a regular for France at various youth levels before ultimately choosing to represent Morocco. He has now made 4 appearances for the Atlas Lions.
With a maturity far exceeding his age, Bouaddi has become a target for several European giants, including Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal.
Club Career: A Rising Star from Lille's Academy
Bouaddi's career is closely tied to Lille, where his rise has been remarkably rapid.
In 2021, the 13-year-old Bouaddi joined Lille's academy. In 2023, the 15-year-old was promoted to the Lille first team – a rare feat. At 16 years and 3 days old, he made his professional debut in European competition, becoming the youngest player in history to appear in a UEFA competition. He also became the first player born in 2007 or later to play in Ligue 1.
In the 2023/24 season, Bouaddi's playing time at Lille increased significantly. In the 2024/25 season, he made 36 appearances across all competitions. On his 17th birthday, he started in a Champions League group stage match, helping Lille secure a memorable 1-0 victory over Real Madrid – his breakthrough performance.
Having established himself as a starter, Bouaddi signed a contract extension keeping him at Lille until the summer of 2029. Meanwhile, his excellent performances have attracted interest from Arsenal, Manchester United, PSG, Chelsea, and others. His market value has soared to €50 million, and Lille are reportedly demanding a fee of up to €70 million or more.
International Career: Choosing Morocco over France
Born in France and holding dual nationality, Bouaddi represented France at U17, U20, and U21 levels, even captaining the France U21 side. However, when it came to his senior international future, he faced a difficult choice.
Ultimately, Bouaddi chose to honour his heritage. On May 15, 2026, the Moroccan Football Federation officially announced that Bouaddi would represent Morocco at senior level. Bouaddi explained that his key motivation was the desire to play for his homeland. He earned his place in Morocco's 2026 World Cup squad.
Bouaddi made his senior debut for Morocco in a friendly in May. In today's World Cup group stage match against Brazil, the 18-year-old started and played the full 90 minutes, becoming the third-youngest World Cup starter in African national team history. His 91% pass completion rate, impressive ball-carrying and progressive passing ability, and mature style earned him unanimous praise from media and fans alike.
