Austria Tops Debutant Jordan 3-1 in Pulsating World Cup Opener

Austria kicked off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over debutants Jordan in a thrilling Group J clash at Levi's Stadium on Wednesday.
The European side broke the deadlock in the 21st minute when Romano Schmid unleashed a spectacular right-footed strike from the edge of the box into the top corner. Austria dominated early possession, but Jordan displayed incredible resilience, threatening on counter-attacks before the halftime whistle.
Jordan made history just five minutes into the second half. Forward Ali Olwan capitalized on a rapid counter, driving into the penalty area and slotting home a clinical equalizer to net Jordan’s first-ever World Cup goal.
The turning point came in the 76th minute when Jordan's defender Yazan Al-Arab accidentally deflected an Austrian corner into his own net, restoring Austria's lead. Deep into stoppage time, a dramatic VAR review awarded Austria a penalty for handball. Veteran striker Marko Arnautovic calmly converted from the spot in the 102nd minute to seal the three points.
With this crucial win, Austria sits second in Group J, just behind Argentina on goal difference, ahead of their heavyweight showdown next week.
