Diaz Shines as Colombia Spoil Uzbekistan’s Historic World Cup Debut

Luis Díaz delivered a masterclass performance to guide Colombia to a 3-1 victory over debutants Uzbekistan in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Group K opener at the Estadio Azteca.
Colombia broke the deadlock in the 40th minute when Daniel Muñoz brilliantly volleyed home a pinpoint loomed pass from Díaz. Uzbekistan, making their first-ever World Cup appearance, fought back valiantly. They found a historic equalizer in the 60th minute when Abbosbek Fayzullaev reacted quickest to nod home a rebound after Eldor Shomurodov's initial volley was parried.
However, Uzbekistan's celebrations were short-lived. Just five minutes later, Díaz showcased his world-class quality, cutting inside from the left flank and unleashing a curling effort that slipped past Uzbek goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov.
Fabio Cannavaro's Uzbekistan side pushed hard for another equalizer, but Colombia sealed the three points deep into stoppage time. In the 99th minute, Jaminton Campaz headed home an unmarked cross from Cucho Hernández to seal the 3-1 win.
With Portugal and DR Congo drawing 1-1 in the other Group K fixture, Colombia sits comfortably at the top of the group standings with three points.
