World Cup Shock: Resilient Cape Verde Holds Uruguay to Thrilling 2-2 Draw

World Cup debutants Cape Verde continued their dream run by securing a dramatic 2-2 draw against South American powerhouse Uruguay at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium. Following their shocking opening stalemate with Spain, the Blue Sharks proved once again they belong on football’s biggest stage.
Cape Verde stunned the stadium in the 21st minute when Kevin Pina drilled an extraordinary 32-meter free kick past veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, marking the nation's first-ever World Cup goal. Shocked into action, Marcelo Bielsa’s side fought back just before halftime. Maxi Araújo leveled the score with a diving header in the 44th minute, and Agustín Canobbio completed the quick turnaround deep into first-half stoppage time.
However, the debutants refused to back down. In the 61st minute, substitute Hélio Varela capitalised on a defensive mistake and a reckless rushing clearance by Muslera, calmly rolling the ball into an empty net.
Despite dominating two-thirds of possession and launching late attacks, Uruguay failed to break the deadlock against a disciplined African side. The result leaves Group H wide open, keeping Cape Verde's hopes of a historic knockout stage qualification very much alive.
