Battle Lines Drawn: Southeast Asia’s Elite Ready for ASEAN Cup 2026

Vietnam will launch their historic bid for consecutive regional titles at the ASEAN Hyundai Cup™ 2026 with a star-studded squad under South Korean head coach Kim Sang-sik. Despite winning the coveted trophy three times (2008, 2018, and 2024), the Golden Star Warriors have never secured back-to-back crowns in the tournament, which celebrates its milestone 30th anniversary this year.

Vietnam's Title Defense in Group A
Coach Kim is leaning heavily on his reliable, trophy-winning stalwarts to break the consecutive-title curse. Vietnam's core attacking trio—Nguyễn Xuân Son, Nguyễn Quang Hải, and Nguyễn Đình Bắc—who spearheaded their 2024 championship run, will once again anchor the team's strategy.
The reigning champions will kick off their tournament against Timor-Leste in Chonburi on July 24. Group A also features competitive matchups against Cambodia, Singapore, and regional giants Indonesia.
Singapore: Head coach Gavin Lee is relying on veteran leadership, calling up 35-year-old captain Hariss Harun alongside striker Ilhan Fandi, as the Lions chase their fifth regional title and their first since 2012.
Indonesia: Looking to shatter their curse of six runner-up finishes, Indonesia is hunting for a historic first-ever title. Tactical mastermind John Herdman has selected a battle-tested squad that recently pushed deep into the fourth round of Asia’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Key figures Rizky Ridho, Yance Sayuri, Thom Haye, and Marc Klok will look to convert their high-level continental experience into regional silverware.

Thailand Leads the Charge in Group B
In Group B, record-holders Thailand aim to extend their dominance by capturing an eighth regional trophy.
Thailand: Head coach Anthony Hudson has injected a mix of elite experience and youthful energy into his squad. The seasoned Buriram United FC trio of Chatchai Bootprom, Pansa Hemviboon, and Narubadin Weerawatnodom will anchor the defense, while rising star Yotsakorn Burapha—who lit up last year's ASEAN U-23 Championship—is expected to ignite the attack. The War Elephants begin their campaign on July 25 against Laos in Vientiane.
Malaysia & The Philippines: Malaysia enters the tournament desperate to replicate their solitary 2010 championship success, while the Philippines aims to disrupt the regional hierarchy and reach their first-ever final.
Myanmar & Laos: Rounding out the group, Myanmar enters a new era under newly appointed manager Jørn Andersen. The former Hong Kong and DPR Korea coach will look to mastermind an upset alongside a developing Laos squad.
