Bernardo Tavares Steps Down from PSM Makassar Amid Financial Struggles
Bernardo Tavares has officially resigned as head coach of PSM Makassar in the 2025-26 BRI Super League, citing ongoing financial issues as the primary reason for his departure. The Portuguese coach had been with the club since 2022, overseeing more than 100 official matches and becoming one of the longest-serving foreign managers in Liga 1.
During his tenure, Tavares frequently faced challenges, particularly financial instability, including delayed salaries and difficulties in player transfers. Despite these obstacles, he managed to leave a significant mark on the club’s history, most notably by leading PSM Makassar to the Liga 1 championship in the 2022-23 season. His guidance also helped elevate players like Ananda Raehan, Yance Sayuri, and Yakob Sayuri to higher levels of competition.
Tavares expressed that he had hoped for improved financial stability and a strong project for the 2025/26 season after discussions with club management, but persistent difficulties made his position untenable. He also highlighted the hurdles in recruiting new players due to FIFA restrictions and the club’s mixed reputation regarding payments. Nevertheless, he took pride in building a competitive squad under challenging conditions.
The decision to resign was timed during the international break, allowing PSM Makassar sufficient time to find a replacement before their next match on October 19. Tavares acknowledged the support of the club’s management, staff, players, and fans, emphasizing the strong bonds formed during his time there. While his departure leaves a notable gap, his achievements and contributions to developing young talent remain a lasting part of the club’s legacy.
