Thiago Silva Leaves Fluminense, Eyes Return to Europe Ahead of 2026 World Cup

Veteran Brazilian defender Thiago Silva has officially terminated his contract with Fluminense, ending his second stint at his boyhood club six months early. The 41-year-old, who rejoined the Rio de Janeiro side in May 2024 after a successful four-year spell at Chelsea, is now a free agent and reportedly planning a move back to European football.
Fluminense confirmed the departure in a statement, praising Silva for leaving "a legacy of dedication and love" for the club. The centre-back, a product of their youth academy who first played professionally for them between 2006 and 2008, was a key figure in recent seasons. He helped the team reach the semifinals of the expanded 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in July and remained a regular starter despite the demanding Brazilian schedule.
Sources indicate Silva's decision stems from a desire to play at a higher competitive level to boost his chances of selection for Brazil's 2026 World Cup squad, having last represented the national team in 2022. Proximity to his family, who remain based in London, is also a priority.
With previous experience at AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain, Silva has been linked to several clubs across Europe, including potential returns to former teams. Interest from Premier League sides, particularly in London, has emerged as he seeks a short-term deal to conclude his illustrious career.
