Álvaro Fernández Moves to Deportivo La Coruña After Sevilla Contract Termination

Spanish goalkeeper Álvaro Fernández has officially left Sevilla FC after mutually agreeing to terminate his contract, paving the way for an immediate transfer to Segunda División side RC Deportivo de La Coruña. The 27-year-old, known as "Ferllo," has signed a deal with the Galician club until June 2027.
Fernández joined Sevilla in the summer of 2024 on a free transfer from Huesca, where he had been a standout performer, contributing to the club's promotion to La Liga. Despite renewing his contract with Sevilla earlier in 2025, extending it to 2027, the Riojan shot-stopper struggled for playing time under new manager Matías Almeyda. He made just 11 appearances for the Andalusian side across all competitions, often overshadowed by established keepers like Ørjan Nyland and Odysseas Vlachodimos.
The move reunites Fernández with coach Antonio Hidalgo, who previously managed him at Huesca during a highly successful spell. There, Fernández showcased his reflexes, command of the area, and distribution skills, earning recognition that led to his inclusion in Spain's Olympic squad for the delayed Tokyo 2020 Games, where he won a silver medal as part of the team.
Deportivo, currently third in LaLiga Hypermotion and pushing for direct promotion, sees Fernández as a key reinforcement for their goalkeeping department. The transfer comes at no cost to the club, providing much-needed depth and experience as they aim to return to the top flight after years away.
Sevilla, meanwhile, frees up a squad spot and wage budget amid ongoing restructuring efforts. Fernández expressed gratitude in his farewell message, highlighting the honor of playing for a major Spanish club and the personal growth from his time at the Sánchez-Pizjuán.This switch offers Fernández a fresh start with guaranteed minutes, aligning with his desire for regular football to revive his career trajectory.
