Ronald Araujo Returns to Barcelona Training After Mental Health Break

FC Barcelona defender and captain Ronald Araujo resumed team training on Monday, marking his return after a month-long absence to address mental health concerns.
The 26-year-old Uruguayan international last featured for the club on November 25 in a Champions League defeat to Chelsea, where he was sent off. Shortly after, Araujo requested indefinite leave to focus on his well-being, a decision fully supported by the club, coach Hansi Flick, and president Joan Laporta.
During his break, Araujo embarked on a spiritual pilgrimage to Israel, visiting sites in Jerusalem and Bethlehem to reconnect with his faith. He later spent time in Uruguay with family over Christmas, maintaining physical fitness through a club-approved program with a personal trainer.
Araujo rejoined his teammates for an open training session at the Estadi Johan Cruyff, completing the full workout as Barcelona prepared for their upcoming Catalan derby against Espanyol on January 3. Sources indicate he is in good physical condition but will take a cautious approach to full competitive return, prioritizing mental and emotional readiness in consultation with club medical staff and specialists.
His comeback bolsters Barcelona's defensive options amid injuries, including to Andreas Christensen. The club continues to emphasize player welfare, highlighting the importance of mental health in professional football.
