Manchester United Sack Rúben Amorim After 14 Months

Manchester United have parted ways with head coach Rúben Amorim after just 14 months in charge, the club announced on January 5, 2026. The decision follows a period of inconsistent results and growing tensions between Amorim and the club's hierarchy.Amorim, appointed in November 2024 following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag, implemented his preferred 3-4-3 formation but struggled to achieve sustained success in the Premier League. Despite reaching the Europa League final in May 2025, United recorded a record-low league finish last season and currently sit sixth in the table.
The sacking comes less than 24 hours after a 1-1 draw with Leeds United, where Amorim publicly expressed frustration over limited January transfer activity and his role, insisting he was hired as "manager" rather than "head coach." Sources indicate internal disagreements over tactical flexibility, recruitment strategy, and power dynamics contributed to the abrupt exit.
In a club statement, United said the change was made "reluctantly" to maximise chances of a high Premier League finish. Former player Darren Fletcher will take interim charge, with a caretaker expected for the remainder of the season and a permanent appointment planned for summer.
Amorim's departure marks the latest chapter in United's managerial instability under INEOS ownership, highlighting ongoing challenges in rebuilding the squad.
