Manchester United in Talks for Ole Gunnar Solskjær's Return as Caretaker Manager

Manchester United are advancing in positive discussions with former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær to appoint him as caretaker boss until the end of the season, following the sacking of Ruben Amorim on January 5, 2026.
Amorim's 14-month tenure ended amid tensions with the club's hierarchy over tactics, transfers, and his role as head coach rather than full manager. His departure came after a 1-1 draw with Leeds United, leaving United sixth in the Premier League.
Solskjær, who has been out of work since leaving Beşiktaş in August 2025, is keen on the role and has no issues with a short-term contract. Reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that talks are progressing well, with Solskjær ready to accept if the club proceeds.
The Norwegian previously served as United's caretaker in December 2018 after José Mourinho's exit, achieving a 74% win rate in 19 games before earning a permanent contract. He managed the club until November 2021.
Other candidates include former players Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher—who is currently interim—and Ruud van Nistelrooy. Director of football Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada are leading the process, prioritizing stability ahead of a permanent appointment in the summer.United face Burnley next, with Fletcher in charge for upcoming fixtures.
