Iran FA President: Outlook for 2026 World Cup Participation Not Optimistic; Domestic League Suspended

February 28 – Mehdi Taj, President of the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran, discussed the prospects of Iran's participation in the 2026 World Cup during an interview with Iranian state television in Tehran.
Iran has already qualified for the 2026 World Cup. According to the schedule, all three of their group stage matches will be played in the United States: against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15, against Belgium also in Los Angeles on June 21, and against Egypt in Seattle on June 26. Additionally, if Iran and the United States were both to finish second in their respective groups, there is a high probability they could meet in the first knockout round.
When asked about the prospects for participating in the World Cup, Taj stated: "Given what has happened today, it is difficult for us to look ahead to the World Cup with optimism. However, the decision on whether to participate should be made by the relevant sports authorities."
Meanwhile, Taj confirmed that the Iranian domestic league has been suspended with immediate effect, and that a resumption date will be announced later.
The league suspension has also impacted several Spanish players plying their trade in Iran. Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Antonio Adán has already returned to Madrid. Munir, who plays for Esteghlal, and Iván Sánchez, who plays for Sepahan, are currently attempting to leave Iran by land.
