Switzerland Clinch Group B Top with Hard-Fought 2-1 Win Over Canada

Switzerland secured first place in Group B with a 2-1 victory over Canada at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver. Second-half goals from Vargas and Manzambi proved enough, despite a late Promise strike giving Canada hope. The first half was a largely uneventful affair, with Embolo's one-on-one save the standout moment before the break.

Goalless First Half
Switzerland had the best chance of the opening period in the 11th minute when Embolo raced clear but saw his effort saved by Crepeau, with Manzambi's follow-up also blocked. Canada responded two minutes later when Larin found himself through on goal but hesitated and failed to finish, with the flag eventually raised for offside.


Vargas Breaks the Deadlock
Switzerland took the lead just seconds into the second half. A Haks through ball from the right found Manzambi, whose cross into the box was missed by Embolo but fell perfectly for Vargas at the back post to fire home. It was a composed finish that rewarded Switzerland's patience.

Manzambi Doubles the Lead
The Swiss put the game to bed in the 57th minute. Embolo played a clever ball into space on the right, and Manzambi ran onto it to shoot first time with his right foot, making it 2-0 and all but ending the contest.


Promise Gives Canada Late Hope
Canada pulled one back in the 76th minute when substitute Promise slid in to convert after Saliba had flicked the ball into his path, making it 2-1 and setting up a nervous finale. Switzerland held on comfortably to seal the three points.

Group B Standings
Switzerland top Group B and are through to the Round of 16. Canada's hopes of advancing are now in serious doubt heading into the final round of fixtures.
