Stalemate in Hanoi: Vietnam and Singapore Share Spoils in Goalless ASEAN Cup Clash

Defending champions Vietnam were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by a resilient Singapore side in their ASEAN Hyundai Cup Group A encounter at the My Dinh National Stadium on Friday night.
Despite dominating possession and controlling the tempo on home soil, the Golden Star Warriors lacked the clinical edge needed to break the deadlock. Vietnam came agonizingly close to scoring in both halves, with a first-half strike rattling the woodwork before Nguyen Tai Loc’s powerful long-range effort struck the frame of the goal once again after the break. A tense Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review also overturned a potential penalty for the hosts, adding to their frustration.
Singapore, organized and disciplined in defense, relied heavily on counter-attacks to exploit the gaps left by the attacking hosts. The Lions grew in confidence during the final 15 minutes, engineering dangerous opportunities through Jacob Mahler and Shawal Anuar. However, Vietnam's goalkeeper Patrick Le Giang produced crucial saves to preserve his clean sheet.
The result leaves Singapore at the top of Group A with seven points from three matches, putting them on the brink of semifinal qualification ahead of their final group game against Indonesia on August 7. Meanwhile, Vietnam sits in third place with four points from two games. The regional powerhouse now faces a must-win, high-stakes showdown against Indonesia on August 3 to keep their title defense alive.
