Merino Double Secures Dramatic 2-1 Comeback Win for Spain Over Croatia

Super-sub Mikel Merino scored a stunning second-half brace to fire Spain to a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory against Croatia, securing their place in the Nations League quarter-finals with two games to spare.

The hosts drew first blood in the 17th minute when veteran winger Ivan Perišić powered home a spectacular header, sending the home crowd into raptures. Croatia successfully stifled the European champions for the remainder of the first half, maintaining their 1-1 defensive resilience.

However, the game turned on its head after the interval with the introduction of Merino. In the 61st minute, the Arsenal midfielder clinical leveled the scoreline, converting a sublime pass from Dani Olmo.

Croatia’s fortunes worsened in the 79th minute when goalscorer Perišić received a second yellow card for a reckless challenge on Marc Cucurella, reducing the hosts to 10 men.

Spain ruthlessly capitalized on their numerical advantage. In the 88th minute, Merino controlled a brilliant diagonal pass from club teammate Martín Zubimendi before smashing a powerful turn-and-shoot finish into the net to seal the dramatic win and maintain Spain's flawless record atop Group A3.
