Just Double Denies Iran as New Zealand Grabs Historic Point in 2-2 Thriller

Elijah Just scored a historic brace as New Zealand fought to a thrilling 2-2 draw against Iran in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Group G opener at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
The All Whites enjoyed a dream start in the seventh minute when Just capitalized on an opening sequence to slot home, making New Zealand the first team to score in this tournament. Iran responded with sustained pressure, which paid off in the 32nd minute. Veteran fullback Ramin Rezaeian curled a spectacular equalizer past Oliver Sail to level the score.
New Zealand restored their lead nine minutes into the second half. Chris Wood expertly turned provider, feeding Just who clinically dispatched his second goal of the match, becoming the first Kiwi to net a World Cup brace. However, Iran hit back ten minutes later. Rezaeian turned playmaker, delivering a precise cross for Mohammad Mohebi to head home the final equalizer.
Iran pushed for a late winner, but Sail made crucial saves to deny Mehdi Taremi. With Belgium and Egypt drawing 1-1 earlier, all four teams in Group G sit deadlocked. New Zealand will face Egypt next, while Iran takes on Belgium.
