After Announcing Departure Post-World Cup, Official: 73-Year-Old Queiroz Returns as Ghana Head Coach

September 5 – The Ghana Football Association has officially announced that 73-year-old Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz will return as head coach of the national team, leading the Black Stars into the next phase of their program.

Queiroz took over from Otto Addo in April of this year and led Ghana to the 2026 World Cup. Ghana reached the Round of 32 (knockout stage) for the first time since 2010, before being eliminated following a 1-0 defeat to Colombia.

After the World Cup, Queiroz's short-term contract expired, and he had signalled he would step down. However, following further discussions between the GFA and the country's Ministry of Sports and Recreation, both sides agreed to continue their partnership. The GFA cited Queiroz's extensive international coaching experience, technical ability, and familiarity with the current squad as the main reasons for reappointing him.

Queiroz's new tenure officially begins with the upcoming international window. Ghana will next compete in 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, including a match against Côte d'Ivoire. The GFA has stated that the duration and full details of the new contract will be announced at a later date.

Queiroz has previously managed the national teams of Portugal, Iran, Colombia, and Egypt, and at club level has coached Real Madrid. He also served as Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant for many years at Manchester United.
